Cartmell Shepherd have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Commercial lawyer with the ability and confidence to head up a commercial department and business services section. We have seven offices across Cumbria and Northumberland (now including Hexham). We offer hybrid working from home mixed with days in the office as business and client needs demand, and are very flexible on which of our offices the successful applicant would prefer as their base.

Whilst we would welcome applications from solicitors who hold an SRA practising certificate from 7 years PQE upwards, we use PQE and salary level purely as a guide and are happy to consider applications from all candidates who consider that they have the skills to fulfil the role and who may be looking for the potential for personal development up to Board level.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver tailored, practical and pragmatic advice and assistance to help clients achieve their commercial goals. You will be ready to hit the ground running, confident in your own ability and knowledge and with some experience of training trainee lawyers. Experience of managing a department previously is not essential. This role represents an excellent development opportunity for a solicitor at associate level or equivalent experience/ knowledge, looking to head up a department and for early promotion to senior associate with a pathway to directorship.

Role details

The role will involve supporting clients in a multitude of industry sectors including leisure and hospitality, food and drink, retail, healthcare, animal care, engineering, manufacturing and production, agriculture diversification, eco business, waste, professional services and property development and management. The department covers all types of Commercial law including:

  • Mergers & Acquisitions
  • Business sales – assets or share sales
  • Incorporations & reorganisations
  • Joint ventures
  • Shareholder & partnership advice and agreements
  • Advice to directors
  • Succession planning
  • Management buyouts
  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts & terms & conditions of business
  • Transactional work ranging from hundreds of thousands to multi million pound deals

In addition an active participation is expected in business development planning and activities, helping expand the existing team and our client base across Cumbria and the North East, with plenty of help from our enthusiastic and progressive marketing team.
